The Bible teaches that God made marriage to be a life-long relationship between a man and a woman.  This is not some arbitrary opinion of an extremist Christian, religious zealot, or radical fundamentalist preacher.  This statement is rooted in a basic principle of life: “the meaning of everything is directly tied to its origin.”  In order to know the original intent of anything it is imperative to understand its beginning and therefore how it was designed to be.

Before proceeding, it is necessary to establish the reality of moral absolutes.  Postmodernism denies the existence thereof and is a case in point example of a logical fallacy.  Those who claim there are no absolutes are making an absolute statement in their denial of absolutes.  Studying ethics is not an effort in futility because there is an absolute standard of righteousness.  The holy character and triune nature of Almighty God, who is the Sovereign Creator and Gracious Redeemer of mankind, is the absolute standard.  Right and wrong can be known because truth is that which is consistent with God’s character and nature as revealed in the Bible.  Truth is also defined as that which is consistent with reality as perceived by God.

When God made mankind on the sixth day of creation several thousand years ago, He made them in His image—fully formed, and intelligent from the beginning.  This is in contrast to evolutionary scientism which teaches that our ancient ancestors were highly evolved ape-like creatures.

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Gen.2:7).  In contrast to the animals, Adam did not originally have a female counterpart.  God showed Adam his need and made “a helper comparable to him” (Gen.2:18, 20).  He brought Eve to Adam and performed the first wedding ceremony.

Marriage’s purpose is to therefore reflect the majesty of God through the husband’s sacrificial love, the wife’s respectful submission, and the couple’s fruitful procreation (Gen.1:27-29).  Our anatomical design bears out the latter simply enough.  Marriage is designed to be between a man and a woman for life.

There is blessing when life is lived according to God’s design in the Bible.  Truth has always had its detractors and Biblical marriage is not excluded. Satan, the father of lies, ardently opposes truth and desires to destroy the work of God beginning with the family.  True love is possible and begins at the cross of Christ whose blood is powerful enough to redeem, heal, restore, and forgive the vilest of sinners.

“Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh.  Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” Matthew 19:4-6
